Romanticizing is to deal with or describe something in an idealized or unrealistic fashion, to make something seem better or more appealing than it really is. In today’s society, people romanticizing mental illness is frequent and is even encouraged by social media. Around 450 million people currently suffer from mental illness, ranking mental illness among the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide. Yet nearly two-thirds of people with a mental illness do not seek help from a professional. Romanticizing mental illness is a major factor as to why people are not getting professional help for their mental illness. Problem: In today’s society we are living in the age of technology. We have cameras, tablets, androids, iPhones, and with all of these technologies, social media was born. People use Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and all of these apps influence people’s lives everyday. One of the influences that social media has is to romanticize mental illness. We see people on Instagram post pictures of girls with cut wrists and degrading captions. On Twitter, there are accounts that tweet about how bad their anxiety was at school today. However, out of all the social media apps, Tumblr is the main source of romanticizing mental illness. There are blogs on Tumblr that are pro ana and mia, nicknames for eating disorders to make them sound â€Å"friendlier†. These blogs are dedicated to posting images and text posts that promote being anorexic and bulimic.
